One piece at a time

NEWS:
It’s been fun and frustrating upgrading the studio–one of those things where you just can’t rush any of it–from research, comparison shopping, placing orders, receiving shipments, checking for defects, returns/exchanges, hooking up each new piece, to experimenting with better placement within the studio. Anyway, I took some photos today–not the typical “here’s my studio layout” kind, but more of the “lavishing love and attention with my camera” kind:

These photos are fantastic. What kind of camera did you use and how did you have it set up? I like the depth of field, but the colors are also very rich and pleasing. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. I shoot mainly with a Canon 1D MarkII. For those shots, I think they were mostly with a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, which is a very good lens for its price. I just shot it handheld at high ISO, with just a couple normal household lights–one on the ceiling, and one I moved around a bit to get better exposure for each shot. I didn’t really try to be clever with lighting placement–it was mostly about choosing the right reflective angle. Since music gear tend to reflect a lot of light, you have to pick just the right angle to catch those reflections so the overall contrast looks good. Even moving an inch with your camera can totally change the look of the shot.
